For some time, residents along the Lake Huron shoreline have been aware of the lack of post-secondary education facilities and opportunities in the area. Commencing in January of 2004, a small group of Goderich citizens began investigating the idea of introducing post-secondary studies in Huron County. At that time, a reported 68% of students in the area did not continue their education past grade twelve. In 2006, the University of Western Ontario offered three first-year university courses in Goderich. The courses were extremely popular and as a result, Western is again offering courses in the fall of 2007. Four courses will be taught in Goderich and one in Southampton. Click here for more information on these university courses (link to "Learning Opportunities - University"). Lake Huron Learning will continue to work with regional universities and colleges to bring post-secondary courses and training to the communities of Huron and Bruce Counties. In addition to the university courses, Lake Huron Learning will be offering non-credit interest courses built around local needs and using local expertise. A two-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has allowed the LHLC to hire a Community Education Developer who, working with the collaborative and the community, will develop a series of courses, workshops and forums to further life-long learning in our communities.
