CONCERT IN AID OF THE DON STONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund allows students to participate in the Kincardine Summer Music Festival. Not only does the fund aid students, but it keeps alive the memory of Kincardine native Don Stone who entertained in this area for many years with his fine trumpet and vocal work prior to his death twelve years ago.

Local musicians participanting will be:
The Lighthouse Swing Band
Jason Hunter & Don Buchanan
The Howlin Dog Vintage Jazz Band

Location:  Knox Presbyterian Church (corner of Durham & Princes ) in Kincardine on Thursday, November 5
th, 2009 at 7:30 PM.

Tickets are $15.00 per person and are available from Jerome's Flowers in Kincardine or by phoning Dave Schmalz at (519) 396 0077.

For those wishing to contribute in other ways, charitable gift receipts will be issued by the Kincardine Summer Music Festival who administers the fund.


UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO INFORMATION NIGHTS

Information nights to answer your questions on admissions, tuition and registration will be held:
  • Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Davidson Centre, Kincardine
  • Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Suncoast Mall, Goderich
The information sessions will provide an overview of Western’s courses, admission requirements, financial aid programs and the enrollment process. Members of the Lake Huron Learning Collaborative and the University of Western Ontario will be on hand to answer any questions students may have regarding life-long learning opportunities in Huron and Bruce County.  Both new and returning students are welcome to attend these sessions. The drop-in times allow potential students an opportunity to discuss their individual learning and financial needs one-on-one with Western advisors from Undergraduate Admissions, Student Financial Services, Registration Services, and Academic Counselling.

PLAY, WORK, LIVE: A CELEBRATION OF WATER Fundraising photography constest show and sale for Lake Huron Learning Collaborative.

When: May 27th - June 18th, 2009

Cost: $10 for first photo and $5 for each additional photo, or free with registration photography series June 3, 10, 17.

Photos displayed at Coffee Culture, 58 Court House Square, Goderich

Winners announced June 24th at 7:00 p.m. at a Gala reception at Coffee Culture.

Photos should reflect a theme of water and be 4 x 6 in size (unframed).

Drop off your photo at the LHLC Office, 35A East St., Goderich, United Way Office anytime between May 27 and June 18 at noon.

INFORMATION NIGHT

The Lake Huron Learning Collaborative and the University of Western Ontario are holding an information night regarding local course offerings for Fall 2009.  Information about upcoming courses can be found under courses and events on this web page. We invite anyone interested to attend and for you to feel free to pass along this information. 

Date and Time:  Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 4 - 7 p.m., Huron County Library, Montreal St., Goderich.


HURON-PERTH CAREER SYMPOSIUM

The Huron Perth Career Symposium will provide a venue where students and adults can visit informative displays, listen to speakers, and meet business, organization, and education leaders to learn more about possible careers in Huron and Perth Counties.

Organization: HealthKick Huron, Foundation for Education & the Bruce Grey Huron Perth Training Board

The Symposium will be held on April 28th - 29th, 2009.

Entrance fee: $2.00 for the daytime symposium. All are invited to attend.

There will also be an evening event and a dinner event, for which registration is required.


SEEING IS BELIEVING: AN ETHIOPIAN EXPERIENCE

John and Adele Kaminski spent the month of November 2008 in Ethiopia, as part of a fund-raising tour organized by CODE Canada. CODE works at a grassroots level in a number of African and South American countries, supporting literacy endeavours by assisting with the establishment of schools and libraries, and by supporting the training of teacher-librarians for the rural areas and the local publishing of pertinent educational materials for those schools.

As part of this 10-person tour, John and Adele had the opportunity to see CODE’s work first-hand, both in urban and very rural settings.
